Hidden fees: how to avoid unpleasant surprises

Some offers look cheap, until the extra bills appear. Here are the fees you need to ask about.

The "from" price is a lure

Many clinics advertise an attractive "from" price that looks cheap by comparison. But "from" means precisely a starting point, the lowest conceivable figure, which rarely covers a real course of treatment. Once you book, the bill often grows as extra services are added.

It is not necessarily fraud, but a sales technique. Your task is to dig out what the final price actually becomes for your situation.

Where the fees often hide

The most frequent extra bills are:

What a Turkey price usually includes — and what to confirm A headline package usually bundles the items on the left; the ones on the right are optional or sometimes charged separately. Usually included The procedure itself Graft extraction and implantation on the day Local anaesthetic Numbing that minimises discomfort during the procedure. Hotel night(s) Accommodation around your procedure Airport & clinic transfers Private pick-up, drop-off and clinic runs Aftercare kit Lotion, spray and medication to take home The first wash A guided first hair wash before you fly home Translator / coordinator A contact who speaks your language Optional add-ons / sometimes extra Extra hotel nights Any nights beyond the package stay PRP (platelet-rich plasma) An optional treatment, priced separately Hyperbaric oxygen therapy An optional add-on at some clinics Exosome therapy An optional add-on at some clinics Revision / guarantee policy What a later touch-up would involve Flights Airfare is usually booked and paid by you Ask for the package in writing — a clear, itemised list is itself a sign of a trustworthy clinic.
  • Extra grafts beyond the package number, the biggest trap if your requirement is higher
  • Medication (painkillers, antibiotics, shampoo)
  • PRP or exosomes as a "recommended" add-on
  • Blood tests and anaesthesia
  • Check-ups and follow-up
  • For a stay abroad: extra hotel nights, transfer, interpreter

The graft trap

The most expensive surprise is often graft related. The clinic tempts you with a package of, say, 3 000 grafts, but when you arrive they "discover" that you actually need 4 500, at a high price per extra graft, which you are now pressured into accepting because you have already travelled.

Your real graft requirement should therefore be established and priced in advance, not on the day of surgery, when your negotiating position is weak.

How to protect yourself

Protect yourself with simple requirements:

  • Ask for a single, written total price based on your specific requirement
  • Have it specified what is included (grafts, medication, tests, accommodation, follow-up)
  • Get written confirmation that no fees will be added on the day
  • Ask directly: "What could make this price rise?"

Transparency is a mark of quality

A serious clinic has nothing to hide in its pricing and is happy to give a clear total price in writing. If the clinic becomes evasive when you ask for it, or cannot give a fixed price, that is in itself a red flag.

Transparent finances are closely tied to transparent quality. Read more about what to look for in a clinic, and ask to understand the price per graft correctly, see choosing a clinic for the context.

The hallmarks of a good offer

You recognise an honest offer by its transparency. A serious clinic gives one combined, written total price based on your specific requirement, specifies what is included, and confirms in writing that no fees will be added on the day of surgery. It also answers the question concretely: "What could make the price rise?"

If the clinic instead becomes evasive when you ask for it in writing, or can only give a "from" price, that is in itself a red flag. Transparent finances and transparent quality usually go together, see the other signs in choosing a clinic.

Do ask to have the price broken down into items (grafts, medication, tests, accommodation, follow-up). An itemised bill is harder to dress up than a round total, and it makes clear what you are actually paying for.
