At home vs. abroad: where should you have it done?

Four considerations that pull in different directions

The choice between staying at home and going abroad is about weighing four things: price, quality and choice, proximity and follow-up. They rarely pull in the same direction: the cheapest is not the nearest, and the nearest is not always the most skilled. So there is no single right answer, only the right answer for your situation.

The advantages of staying at home

Having the procedure in your own country gives you:

• Proximity: no travel, less logistics
• Easy follow-up: you can turn up in person if something needs checking
• Communication in your own language: no language barrier about the plan and aftercare
• A familiar legal system: clearer accountability if something goes wrong

The drawback is a higher price (often €6 000-15 000) and a smaller choice of highly specialised clinics.

The advantages of going abroad

Abroad, especially in Turkey, the picture is reversed:

• A lower price (often €2 500-5 500 for a complete course)
• A large choice and considerable experience because of the high patient volume
• Practical packages with hotel and transfer

The drawbacks are that the quality varies enormously, follow-up requires more planning, and any problems are harder to handle at a distance.

Follow-up is often the overlooked factor

Many people focus on the price and forget the follow-up. If you go abroad, find out before the operation: who do you contact with questions, how quickly do they reply, and is there a coordinator who speaks your language? Good digital follow-up can offset much of the proximity disadvantage.

Quality beats geography

What matters is not the country, but the clinic's documented standards. A top clinic abroad can perfectly well surpass a mediocre one at home, and the other way round. The country is a frame, not a guarantee.

A decision guide for yourself

To arrive at your own answer you can weight the four considerations by what matters most to you:

• Is easy, in-person follow-up essential for your peace of mind? That argues for staying at home.
• Is the budget the main constraint? Going abroad can give more for the money.
• Do you have a complex case (a high Norwood stage, previous procedures)? Prioritise documented expertise, whatever the country.
• Are you comfortable with digital communication? Then distance is less of an obstacle.
