Why follow-up is the overlooked risk

The operation itself lasts one day, but healing and growth stretch over 12-15 months. During that period questions can arise and, in rare cases, complications. When the clinic is a thousand kilometres away, you cannot simply turn up. Follow-up is therefore not a detail, but something to be planned before you book.

A clinic that only thinks about follow-up afterwards is a clinic you should be sceptical of.

Agree it in advance

Most reputable foreign clinics offer digital follow-up via WhatsApp or video, where you send photographs and receive an assessment. Before the operation, find out:

• Who is my contact person after I get home?
• How quickly can I expect a reply?
• Is there a coordinator who speaks my language?
• Do I get a written aftercare protocol to take home?

How good remote follow-up works

Effective digital follow-up rests on good photographs. Take photos in consistent, daylight-like light from the same angles (hairline, crown from the front and from above, donor area), so that the coordinator can assess healing and later growth accurately.

Follow a fixed rhythm, for example photographs after week 1 and months 1, 3, 6 and 12, so that both you and the clinic can follow the process and catch any problems early.

Have a local backup at home

Even with excellent remote follow-up you should know your local emergency plan. At any acute sign you must be able to reach your own doctor or an out-of-hours service quickly, not wait for a reply from another time zone.

Consider informing your own doctor that you have had the procedure, so that your records are up to date if anything should arise.

When you should see a doctor locally

See a doctor locally immediately at any sign of infection: increasing redness, heat, pus, swelling, severe pain or fever. Do not wait for a remote reply with such symptoms: infection has to be treated quickly.

Build your own follow-up routine

Even with a good clinic behind you, you are an active part of the follow-up yourself. Set a fixed photo routine (for example week 1 and months 1, 3, 6 and 12) in consistent light and from the same angles, and note down questions as they arise so that you can ask them together.

Keep all written material (the aftercare protocol, the price agreement and the contact details) in one place, so that you can find it quickly. A well organised patient typically gets better and faster help at a distance. At the same time, learn the normal healing course from aftercare, so that you know when something actually requires action.
