The most widespread myths about hair loss, debunked
Hats, frequent washing, masturbation, sun hats? Most of the "causes" you have heard about are myths. Here are the facts.
Why the myths persist
Few subjects are as surrounded by tenacious myths as hair loss. The reason is simple: people look for control and explanation. If baldness is "caused by" hats, washing or habits, then you can just change your behaviour. The truth, that it is primarily genetics and hormones, feels less manageable, and so the alternatives flourish.
The problem is that the myths make people waste time and money on the wrong things, while the real cause is left to continue untreated.
Hats and headwear
Myth: hats "suffocate" the follicles and cause baldness.
Fact: the follicles get oxygen and nutrition from the blood, not from the air outside. A hat, unless it sits so tightly that it pulls hair out mechanically (traction alopecia), does not affect hereditary baldness in the slightest.
Washing, sun and "clogging"
Myth: frequent hair washing accelerates baldness.
Fact: the hairs you see in the drain were on their way out anyway as a normal part of the cycle. Washing merely removes them, it does not create loss. Washing less often does not "save" the hair; it just builds up sebum.
Myth: sun or a lack of air to the scalp causes hair loss. Also wrong, moderate sun does not damage the follicles (although sunburn should be avoided).

Masturbation, sex and testosterone
Myth: masturbation or a lot of sex lowers the hair by "using up testosterone".
Fact: neither masturbation nor sex affects the DHT level in the scalp that drives hereditary hair loss to any meaningful degree. The body's hormone balance is regulated in a far more complex way than that. This myth is among the most widespread, and the most baseless.
The real cause
By far the majority of cases of male hair loss are caused by hereditary sensitivity to DHT, not by lifestyle, headwear or habits. It is not something you have done wrong, and not something you could have avoided by washing less or leaving off the hat.
If you want to understand the mechanism, read about DHT and heredity, and see what actually works instead of chasing myths.
Dangerous myths that delay treatment
Some myths are more than harmless misunderstandings, they cost hair. The belief that you can "grow the hair back" with natural remedies, oils or supplements alone makes people postpone documented treatment while the follicles quietly miniaturise and disappear. Time is the most valuable resource in hereditary hair loss, and myths steal it.
Another harmful myth is that "it is too late", but even advanced loss has options, both medical and surgical. Swap myths for action: understand the cause in DHT and heredity, and see what actually works.
What the harmful myths have in common is that they shift the focus from what works to what feels controllable. The best antidote is knowledge: understand that hereditary hair loss is a biological process, and that documented treatment, not rituals, is the answer.
