What is ISHRS, and why should you look for it?

The professional community behind the quality

ISHRS (the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) is the world's largest independent medical organisation dedicated to hair restoration, founded in 1993 with thousands of members across many countries. Its purpose is to advance knowledge, research and ethical practice in the field.

Affiliated surgeons commit to professional standards, continuing education and ethical guidelines. That sets them apart from pure "hair mills", where operations and volume come before the patient's result.

Why it is a mark of quality

ISHRS is not a public approval on the level of a health authority, but it signals something important: that the surgeon actively takes part in the international professional community, keeps up to date with methods and submits to a code of ethics. The organisation itself warns sharply, for example, against clinics where untrained technicians perform surgical steps without medical supervision.

Membership is voluntary, which is exactly why it says something about the surgeon's professional commitment.

The surgeon, not the clinic

But note the catch: a clinic can market itself as "ISHRS affiliated" even if that means only one doctor on paper, while your actual procedure is performed by technicians. So ask directly:

• Is the surgeon who performs my procedure personally an ISHRS member?
• Does the surgeon carry out the critical steps personally, or supervise them closely?
• Can I have the surgeon's name and verify the membership?

Combine with other markers

ISHRS should not be your only criterion. You get the strongest picture by combining it with ISO certification (verified processes and patient safety) and MOH approval (official permission from the country's health authority). Together they cover professional standards, safety and legality.

No single abbreviation guarantees a beautiful result, but the absence of all of them is a red flag.

How to use it in practice

Use ISHRS as a filter early in your research: if the surgeon is not affiliated with any recognised professional body and cannot document certifications, you can rule the clinic out straight away.

The ethical work of ISHRS

Beyond bringing professionals together, ISHRS plays an active role in protecting patients. Among other things the organisation has campaigned against so-called "black market" hair surgery, where untrained technicians perform surgical steps without medical supervision, a practice that is widespread at production line clinics and directly linked to poor results.
